Andrew and Catherine Haskins have green thumbs. On the back of their lovely garden centre cafe, Podfood in Pialligo, they have created a combination canteen, cooking school and food store, and two years on, it's flourishing. The upstairs space in the busy, foodie Fyshwick Market is large, open and light. At one end is a cooking bench for classes and at the other, the canteen and store. An arresting display of homemade tarts (ham, tomato and cheddar) and salads (autumn veg and roasted pumpkin and bean) fill the glass cabinets alongside trays of sweet lemon-curd tarts, baby cheesecakes and an impressive chocolate and hazelnut torte. The kitchen lets the food speak for itself in meaty, pan-seared mushrooms with roasted tomatoes and Persian fetta on great slabs of toast for brekkie, and in lamb, roasted eggplant, pomegranate and tomato kasoundi at lunch. There's a variety of prepared food to take home: pork belly, blue-eye with macadamia crust and more.
