Cooks Hill Hotel

When people queue for 30 minutes on a Tuesday night, something's up. Here it's great-value steaks. Service is brisk and the staff busy cooking hearty fare. Sunday to Thursday the menu is steak, chicken fillet, pork or lamb chops, battered fish, kransky sausage and spaghetti bolognese - all big servings with sauce, chips and salad. And everything is $10. The T-bone and pork chops are huge and tender, the chicken unexceptional, the sauces (seeded mustard, diane) fine. The spag bol is too liquid, but the $4 desserts (NY cheesecake) are surprisingly OK. Friday and Saturday sees more choice at slightly higher prices.
