Modern Australian

The Corner Hotel is a Melbourne live music institution and its rooftop bar offers food, views and respite from the band room. It's also a prime spot to grab a drink before watching a game at one of the nearby sport stadiums. A Six Degrees fitout cleverly mixes open air and shelter. When the sun's out, enjoy jugs of Carlton Draught, Melbourne Bitter and Mountain Goat or a bottle of something imported. The wine list offers several prosaic Australian and imported drops. The grub's simple but good: things like parmigiana, steaks and a slightly more adventurous house-made truffled gnocchi. Thanks to Melbourne's finest PA system, any act that performs here sounds white hot. Beer in plastic pots in the band room, hard-metal tunes in the front bar and a calming rooftop bar and dining area complete the deal at Richmond's go-to music club. Live music: nightly. With a list of nearly 400 whiskeys, there's no reason not to spend some time here over winter being coached in the warming art of fine brown liquor.

With views of the city skyline and trains flickering past in the foreground, the Corner's roof bar brings an air of gritty urban romance to summer in the city.
