Plonk turns up the heat on Nara sake

After a sake tasting at the Japanese embassy recently, Plonk at the Fyshwick markets is stocking one of the sakes from Nara that a delegation from Nara, led by Mayor Gen Nakagawa, brought to Canberra.

Naratoyosawa Junmai Ginjo Mushohai sake is expected in the store from tomorrow, Thursday, November 7, priced at about $48.

The Nara sakes show the diversity of this drink – among the more unusual a sake made with yuzu, a light, sweet sake at 5 per cent alcohol, and another sweet plum sake, with double the alcohol and called ‘‘Toro Toro’’, meaning ‘‘thick’’, describing its texture.

Malamay in Barton is now offering a matching of sakes with its degustation menu chosen by sommelier Yann Mengneau, so you can try a range of styles.

The sakes are from around Japan. Six half glasses cost $63, or you can order them by the glass.
