Best pub burgers in NSW

Editor of this year's Pub Food Guide Keith Austin shares six of the best burgers from around the state.

Keith Austin

Berry Hotel, Berry

It's not something you see on a pub menu too often, but the alpaca burger has come to Berry. A sumptuous combination of chargrilled alpaca meat that's locally sourced (we're talking 1km up the road), fresh Turkish bread buns (in keeping with the local theme they're made daily by the baker three doors down), caramelised onions, slow-roasted tomatoes, rocket and cheddar.

East Village Hotel, Balmain East

The EVH is proud of its burger and it has reason to be. It's a mega meaty concoction with all the usual trimmings and just the right amount of chargrill on the outside to leave the inside perfectly juicy. Take a spare napkin; you'll need it.

The Commercial Hotel (Gerry's), Millthorpe

The saltbush lamb is from Wellington in Central NSW, the patty is juicy and firm, conjured to perfection and clean on the palate. Then, stash layers of earthy beetroot relish, rich caramelised onions, crunchy greens and thick tomato slices between buttery buns and the whole package hits the tongue for six.

Kings Cross Hotel, Kings Cross

This chicken burger is now in our hall of food fame, a thing of soft, tasty, beauty. To see a knife stabbed through the heart of that golden bronzed wonder is more desirable than the Hoff ever was in his prime.

Queen Victoria Hotel, Enmore

Apart from being the biggest our reviewer had ever seen, the burger here is all made in-house with about 10 ingredients. The patty is perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and delicious, soft and melt-y in the middle with great seasoning.

Woolwich Pier Hotel, Woolwich

The grass-fed beef burger here is moist, and comes in a sweet, perfect brioche bun with mustard mayo, fries, relish, crunchy house-made pickles, onion jam and good cheddar. A delight.
