All Are Welcome at Northcote cafe and bakery

Nola James

Everyday Coffee's Mark Free and Aaron Maxwell have partnered with Californian chef Boris Portnoy to open a neighbourhood bakery and coffee shop opposite Northcote Town Hall.

Housed in High Street's former Christian Science reading room, the name All Are Welcome comes from the original signage in the modernist library-bookstore. It has been transformed by architect Murray Barker using reclaimed materials – altars and pews rather than religious reading material.

Russian-born, US-raised Portnoy, who moved to Melbourne 3½ years ago, was previously head of pastry at three Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood, in the Napa Valley.

The Everyday team will serve their single origin espresso and batch brew filter coffees alongside Portnoy's savoury tartines (open-faced sandwiches), French-style pastries, and cakes such as Russian-style medovnik, a 10-layer honey cake wrapped in butter-cream frosting.

They will also sell sourdough, rye, and heritage grain breads, cheese, and coffee beans to brew at home. Eventually their baked goods will make it over the hill to Everyday Coffee in Collingwood and Little Collins Street.
