Even when a Sydney food venue has cult status, a sack of awards and its own picklery there's trepidation when it opens its long awaited spin-off in a new suburb.

"Three neighbours came in for breakfast today [the first day] and were back for lunch," says a relieved Alex Elliott-Howery, co-owner of Marrickville's Cornersmith, which has just swung open its doors in Annandale.

There's a similar feel to the Marrickville original, albeit with a slightly more modern take. Elliott-Howery says there are also a few additions to the menu, including buttermilk waffles served with Pepe Saya butter.

"There's a park across the road, so we're doing kids lunch boxes. We've even had a couple of mums hugging and screaming in delight ... They've been so welcoming," she adds.

The big kids are tucking into charcoal bread with buttermilk ricotta, broad beans and pickled baby eggplant. Currently operating daytime only, Elliott-Howery has long-term aspirations to extend that into the evening. "I'd love to be able to do a producers' night," she says.
