If the lock-out laws have widened the perceived gulf between affluent Potts Point and its neighbour Kings Cross, the Sugarmill Hotel has decided if you can't beat them, join them. From Tuesday the Sugarmill reopens as the Potts Point Hotel, with a redesign budget befitting its nouveau status.

"The [location] was once downtown Kings Cross, now we like to think it is uptown Potts Point," says GM Chris Jolliffe.

The land grab is matched by an aspirational chef grab, Matt Kemp protege Tush Bamji in charge of the pans.

Bamji's instrument of choice in the kitchen is the ubiquitous smoker, and there is a very Potts Point sounding grilled watermelon, prawn, pickled diakon and ponzu dish on the opening.

"We've put in a designated dining space on the ground floor that's clean and warm and has lots of leather," Jolliffe says.

Open daily 11.30am-10.30pm.
