1kg packs of Nanna's frozen raspberries added to hepatitis A recall

The Nanna's frozen berry recall has extended to packs of raspberries as the maker revealed it dumped a supplier potentially linked to a hepatitis A outbreak, late last year.

Patties Foods, owners of the Nanna's brand, announced on Tuesday it had added one kilogram packs of Nanna's raspberries to the packs of Nanna's mixed berries and Creative Gourmet mixed berries in its consumer recall. A Chinese raspberry supplier was identified as a common link between the two products already recalled after a hepatitis A outbreak and is also linked to the one kilogram Nanna's raspberry packs.

The raspberry link was found after a global supply chain investigation, the company said. Patties stopped using the Chinese supplier last year.

Patties Foods managing director and chief executive officer Steven Chaur described the further recall as a precautionary measure.

"While there are no confirmed test results indicating a potential link to Hepatitis A, we are working proactively with health authorities based on the information they have presented to date," Mr Chaur said.

"Investigations through our supply chain have identified a specific source of raspberries as a potential common link to the possible safety issues raised by health authorities.

"The specific source supplied raspberries which were packed in Nanna's and Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries, that were the subject of the consumer recall announced over the weekend," he said.

Consumers should look for one kilogram Nanna's raspberry packs that are dated best before 15/09/16 or earlier and return them to the place of purchase for a full cash refund.

"Some product that was previously supplied by the source may still be in the market and we are taking this added precautionary measure of conducting an additional consumer recall of all frozen raspberries associated with this specific source located in China, in the interests of public safety," Mr Chaur said.

The supplier did not provide raspberries for smaller Creative Gourmet packs of 300 gram and 500 gram and these are not part of the recall.

"The Consumer Recall is in advance of further microbiological test results, but given the potential health threat and the level of community concern, we are taking this precautionary measure."

He apologised on behalf of the company to consumers and customers for the distress it had caused.

Nanna's fruit pie products are not affected by this recall, he said.

The following batches are included in the recall: Nanna's 1kg mixed berries, dated up to and including best before date 22/11/16, Creative Gourmet mixed berries 300g, dated up to and including best before date 10/12/17, Creative Gourmet mixed berries 500g, dated up to and best before 06/10/17 and Nanna's 1kg raspberries dated up to and including best before date 15/09/16.
