Kingston Foreshore stalwart 38 Espresso has had a makeover, and while they're still all about the coffee, there's a whole lot more to the cafe now.

The space was temporarily closed and cleared out. It's reopened with a new lick of paint - in a Tiffany Blue-esque hue no less - a new kitchen, new furniture from locals Naturally Ingrained Designs and has been completely opened up with a giant glass window that opens to an outdoor bench and service area.

The menu has been expanded and owners Nick and Ryan Jennings are now focussing on healthy eats and a fresher feel, with as much made in-house as possible.

"We wanted to get away from the male-heavy bread menu we used to have which was a by-product of me just coming up with stuff I liked," laughs Nick.

"So we tried to go as healthy as we possibly can, as fresh as we can. We've started to make our own nut milk and from that we've got our almond meal which then we use in our pancakes. All of the little processes that we started to do with the coffee we decided to implement in the food. So all of our butters, all of the spices that we use, everything we possibly do we try to do it in house now instead of sourcing it from someone else."

The breakfast menu is in full swing, with a few eggs options, some sweet dishes, a kids plate and a breakfast burrito. The lunch menu will kick off at the end of this week, with a focus on salads and meats, plus a cheeky fried chicken BLT burger which, according to the menu, is cooked with, 'a little bit of love'.

And like any good balance, they also have a deep fryer yet to arrive, and they're going to make donuts and other tasty treats on their, "naughty side menu".

They will also eventually have a grab and go lunch fridge with wraps, rice paper rolls, soups and the like for takeaway.

The final piece of the new-look 38 Espresso is coming in late November, with plans to open on Friday and Saturday nights for fish and chips served through the giant window. Only the outdoor seating area will be open for it, but you can BYO drinks and enjoy dinner by the lake.
