Eugenio Maiale's toqued Darlinghurst restaurant A Tavola will open a Bondi Beach outpost this year at the Hall Street development on the site of the old Hakoah Club. A Tavola Bondi will swing open its doors in August; Gelato Messina has also signed to open at the development.

With North Bondi Italian Food, La Macelleria and Pompei's already in the area, Bondi Beach has serious claims as Sydney's emerging new Little Italy. Maiale says the Hall Street development will also have a shopping strip with a bakery, fish shop and meat supplier.

"I've been looking for a site for a new place for two or three years. It's every chef's dream to do something near the water. It'll be a beachside version of A Tavola, with the same philosophy and menu format but more seafood," he says.

Bondi's A Tavola will also feature a large communal table.
