Bondi's Italian flavour grows

Is Bondi Beach Sydney's new little Italy? If the influx of new venues to the suburb is any indication, visitors will soon be able to use lire to pay for the parking meters.

A Tavola Bondi opened on the weekend at the Hall Street development where the Hakoah Club once ruled. Gelato Messina has also swung open its doors nearby also, and Maurice Terzini's pizzeria is slated to open there in mid-November. A Tavola owner-chef Eugenio Maiale says Pasticceria Papa will also become a neighbour.

"It's a huge site. They'll do a food store, cooking classes, it's like Eataly," Maiale says.

His own restaurant has punched out its first squid ink tagliolini with calamari and bottarga in a cool space that includes a large, communal marble table and window displays of pasta.

Hyped Melbourne coffee outfit St Ali is also close to pulling its first espresso.

Sydneysiders do not live on ciabatta alone, but modern Asian food fans will have to wait until early 2014 to eat at China Diner. And the future direction of the North Bondi Italian Food site is unclear, with talk the restaurants' new owners are eyeing a more traditional seafood-focused future.
