Sydney's predicted meatball invasion feels like it has stalled on the launch pad in the past few months, but the trend that has already rolled through New York and Melbourne is finally gaining momentum.

When Bootleg Bar + Italian Food at Potts Point closed its doors recently, it prompted plenty of discussion about its future. It'll reopen in mid-June as Bootleg Meatballs.

Co-owner Rob Gal says meatballs have always been a best seller, regularly selling out. So they've decided to punt exclusively on the dish.

They won't be alone. Pony Dining at the Rocks is also opening a neighbouring restaurant devoted to meaty balls.
