Brisbane gets a second food truck

Brisbane's lone food truck The Bun Mobile will have company out on the streets from tonight.

The Wandering Elephant is a considerably smaller operation than the beefy Bun Mobile but will no doubt receive just as big a welcome from food lovers hungry to see Brisbane's food truck culture develop. The duo behind the colourful trailer are Ben Carter and Anthony Bartzis, who met while studying architecture at university. Both come from hospitality backgrounds with Carter's parents owning a Thai restaurant on the Sunshine Coast and Bartzis's folks the owners of Cafe San Marco at South Bank (which went under in the 2011 floods and has never re-opened.)

"At the moment we're looking at operating Monday to Friday, we've had a pretty good response from local businesses who want us to come to them and we haven't even started yet," Bartzis says.

Their license allows them to visit most suburbs apart from the CBD, the Valley and Paddington, he says.

Carter will be behind the burners, producing a short and extremely well-priced Asian menu (nothing over $10) including beef rendang, spring rolls, Thai beef salad, ayam goreng and satay served in (very cool) takeaway boxes. They've just been given a five-star hygiene rating from the council too.

If you want to catch The Wandering Elephant at its launch tonight, it will be parked up at 122 Boundary Street in the West End (in the laneway behind the fruit shop). They'll also be selling wine, beer and cider, with all profits from alcohol sales tonight going to the AEIOU foundation for children with autism.
