It's official (at least according to us) - Brisbane has nailed breakfast. The increased competition within the cafe scene is a bonus for diners, with venues across the city serving up more imaginative breakfasts.
Mighty Mighty recently began opening for weekend breakfasts, with US-inspired offerings including southern fried chicken and waffles, smoked brisket and hush puppies, and blueberry and brown ale "biscuit".
At Paddington newbie Shouk, there's a goat's milk and date panna cotta, and a cumin and lime creme patissiere crepe with pomegranate syrup.
Picnic at Camp Hill are spicing up breakfast with dishes like spiced potato and kale with paratha bread, poached eggs, mango chutney and cucumber raita.
They're pushing the breakfast trolley even further at 85 Miskin Street as they open for weekend breakfasts from Saturday, May 3 with a degustation menu. The menu starts with house cured salmon with herbed creme fraiche, capers, lemon, crispy potato and foam, and wraps things up with a yoghurt panna cotta with native bee honey, granola wafer and berries. For sweet fiends, the a la carte menu has a "breakfast dessert" section.
At The Burrow in West End, there are cutely named breakfast dishes like "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" – an Earl Grey tea and lavender bread and butter pudding served with flower garden and peach jam pinwheel butter. Or tuck into the "Kawaii Bento Box" of sweet rice pudding sushi topped with fresh fruit, chia seeds, coconut and candied ginger.
Then there are the seasoned cafes like Au Cirque and Gunshop Cafe who have been leading the way and serving up superior breakfasts for years. If you haven't done breakfast in a while, get out there and we reckon you'll agree that no other Australian city does breakfast as well as Brisbane.
