The former Fratelli Fresh site in Waterloo rises again this week as Danks Street Produce Merchants, and while its 1200 square metres of market space and 100-seat Mezzanino restaurant are an impressive addition to the neighbourhood, it has been a massive undertaking to get it open.

The Quattroville family from Mosman's Fourth Village Providore are rumoured to have spent upwards of $3 million on the two-year build, decent coin after splashing $10 million on the property, which includes a neighbouring space, December 2013. Customers from the buildings' Fratelli Fresh period will still find the familiar casa doors, but the carpark has given way to extra market space, making it an even grander undertaking.

Fruit and vegetables are sold side-by-side with fresh flowers and specialist outlets such as the Free Range Butcher and The One that Got Away. Owner Peter Quattroville says inspiration came from local markets in Italy and France. Accoutrement will also open in a neighbouring space.

The first floor Mezzanino restaurant has a fleet of trolleys burning rubber, serving piattini-style dishes. The project even has its own touch of Fratelli, with Peter and wife Annette's three sons all involved in the business.
