There's still time for restaurants to get on board with DineSmart, a national fundraiser run by StreetSmart Australia to help people who are homeless or at risk.

From November 14 to December 31, participating restaurants ask diners to add a $2 donation to their bill. Last year, DineSmart raised $260,000, which went to small-scale projects that often miss out on funding.

"The variety of projects reveals the complexity of homelessness," says former businessman Adam Robinson, who founded StreetSmart Australia in 2003.

DineSmart has helped install a shared laundry in a community centre, funded a housing program for women recently released from prison, and supported a soccer program for homeless and marginalised people. The money goes to projects based near each participating restaurant.

More than 75 restaurants around the country have already signed up for DineSmart 2016, including long-time supporters Chin Chin, Longrain, Union Dining and Izakaya Den.

StreetSmart Australia won the Food for Good Award in The Age Good Food Guide 2017.
