When a consortium headed up by businessmen Gerry Harvey, Mark Carnegie and John Singleton snapped up the lease for Sydney's Entertainment Quarter, they promised more food for the precinct and toured the markets of the world in search of inspiration for EQ's long-term aspiration to offer a daily food market.

Word on the streets is that Grand Central Market in Los Angeles is the prototype of what they'd like to achieve down the track, but in the meantime some baby steps are taking place to bring some much-needed food lustre to the Moore Park development.

A branch of Fratelli Fresh opened there a fortnight ago, and Christopher Thé, of Newtown's Black Star Pastry, has confirmed he's EQ-bound.

"We're hoping to open in October, we've taken a big site near to Fratelli Fresh," Thé says.

It'll include a large production area, with an eat-in area, and customers tucking into more than just Black Star's strawberry watermelon cake.

"I really admired what Mike McEnearney did at Kitchen by Mike, so it'll have a savoury focus with fresh salads and roast meats," Thé says.

Clever coffee roaster The Little Marionette is also headed to EQ but fans will have to be patient because a Marionette spokeswoman says its opening is still six months away.
