China Lane co-owners Steve and John Anastasiou have snapped up the Ash Street site jettisoned by the owners of Fratelli Paradiso, the latest in a string of restaurant deals set to test diner supply at the northern end of the Sydney CBD.
"Yes, we've secured the space, it will be an all-day eatery. Dare I say it, similar to Fratelli Paradiso," says Steve Anastasiou of the yet to be named restaurant.
It will open next March, with a significant Sydney chef poised to join the project. There are clearly plenty of ravenous diners in the CBD streets, with Movida owner-chef Frank Camorra also hopeful of a March 2016 opening at his new restaurant in the Commonwealth Bank building on Pitt Street, opposite the Westin hotel.
"It'll be all-day, I want to do Spanish buns [mollette] for breakfast," Camorra says.
Camorra will join another Melbourne restaurateur, Maurice Terzini, who is opening a new restaurant-bar a couple of hundred metres away from Camorra on Penfold Place.
On Bligh Street the team behind city bars Baxter Inn and Shady Pines are opening a restaurant, Hubert, while a host of other big food names are also city bound.
Earlier this month Good Food revealed chef Guillaume Brahimi will open Bistro Guillaume, on the corner of George and Jamison streets.
Sydney's Restaurant Opening Index is particularly hot around Martin Place, where the seismic activity includes a 130-seat Greek gastro-temple opening early next year with David Tsirekas in the kitchen.
The network of lanes surrounding Anastasiou's coming Italian eatery on Ash Street are also buzzing, with construction under way at Mercado, where former Nomad chef Nathan Sasi has an innovative menu planned, and David Thompson's Long Chim is also being tipped for a possible opening at the other end of Angel Place.
Consider yourselves warned, city dwellers – it's time to hit the gym.
