Gelato Messina opens on September 8 at the former site of Gelatomassi in King Street, Newtown, part of a new push by operators back into the Italian heartland of Sydney's inner west.

Messina founder Nick Palumbo argues Italian operators have a renewed interest in the Sydney stronghold.

"If I was asked where is the most romantic place in Sydney [that] I'd love to open in, I'd say Haberfield," he says.

"Hopefully one day I will. Our push into the inner west goes up a notch next month when we open at Harold Park Tramsheds. There'll be a gelateria, and a bakery, which, while not exclusively Italian, has a Calabrian baker."

It isn't the only Italian venue headed to the inner west development. A pasta bar, Flour Eggs Water, will also open there.
