Ground zero for George Calombaris's plan to conquer Sydney can be revealed.

The MasterChef judge has snapped up the Newtown site of GRK Souvlaki, at 206-208 King Street, with confirmation coming from another GRK store and agent Steffan Ippolito, from Oxford Agency.

Calombaris and his partners will kick off their Sydney invasion with the approachable Jimmy Grants souvlaki chain, the Newtown branch opening as early as next month and a second to follow at a CBD shopping centre.

Back in 2015, Good Food revealed that Calombaris and his partner had snapped up a hot dog-thin building on the corner of Albion and Mary Streets in Surry Hills, later acquiring the neighbouring building.

After little activity, work finally seems to be under way at the location.

The chef also came close to securing premises at the northern end of the Sydney CBD, where he planned to introduce one of his more upmarket Melbourne restaurant offerings.
