Ever found yourself in the city with a hankering for Japanese but no idea where to find sushi late at night? Or in a regional town, after the best pub steak and coldest schooner? Or perhaps you've just been in need of a very strong coffee, very quickly. The new Good Food app is here to help.

The Good Food app, which launches on Tuesday, provides instant access to more than 7000 reviews from Australia's most respected restaurant critics, plus the ability to book a restaurant table without switching to another application or website.

"As the trusted source of all things dining, Good Food has set the industry standard with its 'hatted' scoring system and independent restaurant reviews, which are now all available in the Good Food app," says Sonya Hoyle, General Manager of Food at Fairfax Media.

The free download of the Good Food app (available on the App Store), displays the user's location and the restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs nearby. The search function can also be filtered by cuisine, and users can explore dining options in other suburbs and states. Integration with an online booking system means a table can be reserved without leaving the app, although venue phone numbers are also provided if the restaurant needs to be contacted directly.

Users can access the premium version of the App for an annual payment of $9.99. This opens up access to all the Good Food Guide reviews hats and scores from across Australia – critics' verdicts on everything from suburban pho and pizzerias to the finest fine-diners in the city. It's the same information you would get in the Good Food Guide book, which retails at $24.99, but in app format, with thousands more venues.

Future versions of the app will include a home delivery function and also allow users to order food from a venue in advance. Never go without sushi again.

The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2017 will be on sale in newsagents and bookstores from September 6, with all book purchases receiving free premium access to the Good Food app. The Guide is also available for the discounted price of $14.99 with purchase of the Sydney Morning Herald.
