In what has become the Melbourne food scene's worst-kept secret, Crown Resorts has flagged that international celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal will be opening a restaurant at Southbank, with a media conference scheduled for Monday morning.
The chef, as well known for his outlandish televisual kitchen experiments as for his cooking, flies into Melbourne next week to announce restaurant plans, believed to be at the former Breezes site.
The invitation confirms the announcement will be "regarding his first international restaurant".
The project is rumoured to be modelled on Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, his two-Michelin-starred restaurant at London’s Mandarin Oriental at Hyde Park.
Blumenthal's interest in the Melbourne food scene is well-known.
In an interview with 3AW last year, he said: "If you want diversity, great food, comfortable, relaxed and buzzing environment ... I would say the four best (cities) are London, New York, Sydney and Melbourne. I would put Melbourne ahead of Sydney, though.”
The self-taught cook’s first restaurant, the Fat Duck, is consistently rated among the world’s top restaurants.
