Carlton North locals have welcomed a diminutive, open-fronted ''1950s English workshop lunchroom'' to the neighbourhood. Arkwright & Co's sunny Laminex-and-lino interior comes courtesy of owners Bryce Ritchie and John Arvanitis, who designed the fit-outs at Seven Seeds, Brother Baba Budan and Brunswick's Kumo Izakaya.
The brief menu is a short but sweet spread: things like Noisette pastries, house-made granola, toasted fig fruit bread with lemon curd and sandwiches, including the suitably nostalgic cucumber with mint, avocado, mascarpone and rocket - best taken with a pot of proper tea or Seven Seeds coffee. Open daily 6.30am-6.30pm.
