Only about one in 20 Australians consumes enough vegetables, a national survey of eating habits shows.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics questioned more than 12,000 people about the foods and drinks they consumed in the 24 hours prior to being interviewed, and released the first results on Wednesday.
Nationally, just 6 per cent of participants met the recommended daily intake of vegetables. That ranges from 2.5 serves for toddlers to six serves for adult males.
However, more than half of Australians (52 per cent) ate the recommended two serves a day of fruit.
Tasmanians were the biggest tea drinkers as 41 per cent enjoyed a brew in the 24 hours prior to being interviewed.
Half of all South Australians had a coffee in the day prior to their interview.
Perhaps owing to the heat, Northern Territory residents were the least likely to have either tea (28 per cent) or coffee (37 per cent).
The survey shows Northern Territorians are the nation's biggest beer drinkers, with 21 per cent having had a beer in the 24 hours prior to the interview, compared with 14 per cent of NSW residents, 12 per cent in Victoria and 11 per cent in the ACT.
When it comes to wine, the tables are turned. In all, 22 per cent of Canberrans admitted to a glass of wine in the 24 hours prior to the interview, compared with 18 per cent of South Australians and West Australians, 15 per cent of Victorians and Tasmanians, 14 per cent of Queenslanders and 13 per cent of Northern Territorians.
