Pastry chef Matt Forbes has worked for Shannon Bennett at Vue de Monde and Raymond Blanc and Michel Roux in Britain but has invested his dough in a new Yarraville venture, a cafe called Cobb Lane, which will open in a former clothing shop on Anderson Street next month.

Forbes has been operating a wholesale pastry business but will venture into retail with former food business partner Michael Fox, a Good Food Guide young chef of the year, helping out with the savoury menu.

The 75-square-metre cafe will seat just 15, and is expected to open by November 20 for breakfast and lunch.

''We want dishes that get away from mashed avocado on toast and baked eggs; it'll be something more English,'' says Yorkshire native Forbes.
