David Ballinger, former chef and co-owner of the Pour Kids in Malvern, has decamped to Hawthorn, emerging with a cheery, pint-sized patisserie worthy of any Parisian arrondissement. Humble is an unrestrained outlet for Ballinger's not-so-secret baking obsession.

The timber counter offers plenty to tempt: flaky croissants, savoury tarts, chewy canele and Ballinger's exceptional jam-filled lamingtons. There's excellent Axil coffee too, and if the caffeine and sugar don't get you, the cute, colourful interior will .
