Gelato fans queued a hundred deep in Sydney on Monday night to sample some of the world's best after an inner-west cafe took out the Gelato World Tour title in Rimini, Italy.

One of the owners of Enmore's Cow and the Moon, Wendy Crowl, said the reaction from the public had been overwhelming.

She fronted the shop with extra help from family while her husband and son, who work at the business, were in Italy for the awards.

"It's been an amazing 24 hours," Crowl said. "The biggest thing is we just cannot believe how people have been so delighted we've actually won - it's amazing."

Queues began forming at lunchtime on Monday - as captured in the Facebook post below - and eight tubs of the bar's award-winning almond affogato flavour sold out at 8pm, with the other flavours following soon after.

"I've never seen the cabinet look so decimated in all of my life," Crowl said.

Crowl said she was pleased her husband John's dedication to the gelato industry had been acknowledged after many years in the business.

"He's mentored a lot of people in the past 25 years," she said. "It's lovely to see [him] actually getting some recognition."

Crowl and her team have been working since 6am to restock their tubs. The shop will be open until 10.30 tonight.
