The Age Good Food Guide awards: on tonight

For three decades the last week in August has been in the diary of every top chef and restaurateur in Victoria as they nervously celebrate the annual Age Good Food Guide awards. Tonight they’ll gather from 6.30pm to hear who has been awarded the 78 hats bestowed among over 500 restaurants reviewed for the new guide, the 34th edition.

The coveted "chef's hats" have been bestowed since the first edition, edited by Claude Forell, still one of the guide’s most trusted reviewers. The hat symbol was re-designed by the late Melbourne artist David Band in 2004, to coincide with the guide’s 25th edition. The Age Good Food Guide 2014 co-editor Roslyn Grundy says there will be some surprises among tonight's awards, and notes the new guide reveals our enduring interest in Italian cucina, the rise of the bar with great food, and Fitzroy’s continuing dominance as a hospitality hotspot.
