Darlinghurst stalwart The Victoria Room closed on Sunday, the future direction of the venue to be decided in coming weeks.

Jill Jones-Evans and her team ran the venue for a decade, pioneering a hybrid model of high tea coupled with cocktail bar and full-blown restaurant. It sold mid 2013 to Mike Manassen, who lavished the giant space with an opulent redesign.

Manassen declined to comment, but Victoria Room's reservations staff confirmed to Good Food "we're going to be closing the venue on the 31st of May, this Sunday."

Fans of the venue mightn't be out of it for long, the landlord's property spokesman confirming a sale of the business is in progress. "There are leases to be reassigned, hopefully they can be in there within a fortnight," he says, refusing to name the purchaser. A number of potential suitors have been tipped, including rumours the team from The Island are circling the venue.
