Sydney's Martin Place will be transformed into Australia's largest restaurant for a day this Monday when 5000 members of the public feast for free on food that would have otherwise been wasted.

The Feeding 5000 event, run by OzHarvest and the United Nations Environment Program, has been booked out with people snapping up seats for the opportunity to see what savvy chefs, including Kylie Kwong, Martin Boetz, James Viles and Lauren Murdoch can create from the stockpile of rescued food.

Simultaneous, but smaller lunchtime events will be held in Brisbane and Adelaide. The huge communal lunch in Martin Place will also feature a panel discussion on the topic of food waste, food sustainability and food security.
