Wok star lifestyle

Janne Apelgren

What happens on the bus stays on the bus was pretty much the way it went when Andrew McConnell quietly admitted he'd been a rock star chef at last week's Epicure-Renault reader dinner. McConnell said he'd toured with and cooked for Prince, Bryan Ferry and Whitney Houston. He recalled spending Thanksgiving in Amsterdam with Houston, struggling to work with food she'd had flown in from the US, but had learnt to cook grits. ''I don't talk about it much,'' McConnell told the audience, when discussing his years in London, Shanghai and Hong Kong.Who had the worst taste? It was crooner Tom Jones. Now overseeing five restaurants, McConnell admitted Vegemite on toast was one of his food staples. And, asked just how popular Golden Fields' New England lobster roll really is, McConnell said, as of Thursday afternoon, they'd sold 53,162.
