What's Australia's favourite Christmas recipe?

Gingerbread, rocky road, white Christmas? Eggnog versus sangria? Which Christmas treat or tipple do you prefer?

It seems Australians fall into one of two main camps when it comes to favourite Christmas goodies for December cook-ups, and our tastes appear to be influenced by the weather.

According to Google Australia, if you live in NSW, Victoria, the ACT or South Australia, you're most likely to have been hunting down gingerbread recipes in recent weeks. Yet those in the warmer climes of Queensland and West Australia are more likely to favour a white Christmas in the form of the iconic Australian chocolate slice; the no-bake treat understandably more attractive to those already facing oven-like temperatures.

In our chilliest state, people were on the hunt for traditional shortbread recipes for their loved ones. Tasmanians also favour gingerbread and pavlova over a snowy slice of white Christmas.

The weather theory falls down when it comes to people in the Northern Territory, who apparently like nothing more than baking gingerbread, pavlova and sponge for a trifle.

There were few other surprises in the state-by-state favourite Christmas recipe lists, although the "nuts and bolts" favoured by South Australians may mystify people living elsewhere across the country. For the uninitiated, nuts and bolts is a party snack made up of salted nuts, breakfast cereal and powdered chicken soup among other ingredients ... although perhaps South Australians were searching for the slightly more sophisticated (and more realistic-looking) chocolate version made famous by Basque restaurant Arzak?

Finally, it seems fruit mince pies have fallen out of favour as a Christmas gift with home bakers; they did not make the top 10 most popular Christmas recipes in any state or territory.
