Best buy

Rockmelons don't ripen once off the vine. For a sweet pick, look for a raised net and a perfectly smooth stem end. When ripe, the melon slips easily from the stem, so leftover bits of stem are signs of a melon plucked too early.

In the vegie patch

French tarragon is hard to keep alive but even harder to buy (most of what's available is the coarser, brutishly healthy Russian type) so try it this season.
