This lemony elixir pops up on so many drink lists you could be forgiven for thinking it's an age-old cocktail from a time when the Manhattan was considered cutting-edge. Rather, it's the signature drink of Australian-born bartender Sam Ross who came up with recipe in 2005 while working at New York's famous Milk & Honey bar. It might not be able to cure a common cold, but it should make the sniffles halfway bearable.
The original recipe calls for fresh ginger juice and honey but Australia's-own Bickford's makes a fine cordial substitute.
Here's a recipe from Diageo's Sean Baxter.
Ingredients
45ml smoky blended whisky such as Johnnie Walker Double Black
15ml lemon juice
30ml Bickford's Lemon, Honey and Ginger Cordial
5ml smoky single malt whisky such as Talisker Skye
2 slices of fresh ginger
Method
Combine all ingredients except for the smoky whisky and ginger in a shaker. Fill completely with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a short glass filled with ice. Drizzle over your choice of smoky whisky and garnish with fresh ginger.
