Often when a new place opens up in Canberra it ends up being called "that new place at the Woden shops, I can't remember the name, it's called something like [insert random name here]".

That's not likely to happen to Dickson's new pub - the cheekily named Duck's Nuts.

And you're even less likely to forget the even more cheeky (or should that be ballsy) pub logo.

The Duck's Nuts is on Woolley Street, replacing Irish pub O'Neill's, which went into liquidation in March last year but kept serving schooners until it finally closed its doors some time later.

Ebullient Sydney chef Danny Russo, who reshaped the menu at Marble and Grain in Braddon, is in charge of the food at the Duck's Nuts and says it will be a gastropub menu.

"We'll do a lot of classic dishes, it's going to be a place where there is enough variety on the menu," he says.

"It's female friendly, we've got lots of salads, share plates. It's designed to come in, have a glass of wine with friends, or a cocktail. It's a beautiful way to eat, having great company."

He's still refining the final menu but there look to be a lot of small bites and traditional pub snacks, such as spiced mixed nuts and chicken wings. But there are also substantial sounding salads with plenty of greenery, a list of burgers, and a grill section for rib eye with chips and pepper sauce.

Russo says the bar side of things will focus on a big selection of craft beers and a list of local wines.

"We want it to be a real local place, using a lot of local produce," he says. "It's so relaxed, so airy. It's got great design and it feels welcoming."

Russo has been working with the Capital Hotel Group, which owns Marble and Grain and the Duck's Nuts, for a while and says Canberra's got a great food scene and good produce.

"I've come to love coming down to Canberra. We're very fortunate, there are not many places where you can actually talk to the suppliers one on one. We've got the easy job, putting it together - they've got the difficult job of growing it," he says.

The Duck's Nuts opens on Friday March 11 at 30 Woolley Street, Dickson.
