Pint of Origin

The Schloss Shanahan team visited Melbourne during Good Beer Week for a range of cultural activities. Somewhere between the Victorian National Gallery and West Coast Eagles playing Collingwood at the MCG, we checked out a couple of Pint of Origin venues.

With only a couple of hours for beer, we strolled around Fitzroy, stopping for a pot each at the Rainbow, Tramway and Gertrude pubs. For three blokes, that meant just three beers each. But we shared, giving us exposure to nine different brews.

The Rainbow featured nine beers from NSW; the Tramway offered nine South Australian beers and a pear cider; and The Gertrude served eight Tasmanian beers and one cider.

We barely touched the edges of what Good Beer Week has to offer (it’s a state-wide event). To the venues and organisers, we recommend in future offering tasting portions to allow beer lovers the chance to try more of the big range available.

St Peter’s Ruby Red Ale

St Peter’s, from Suffolk, UK, comes in a distinctive, oval-shaped bottle, apparently a facsimile of a style developed in 1770. The colour is a deep red-brown and the aroma and palate both lead with an attractive herbal, hoppy aroma which meshes seamlessly with the smooth chocolate and malt flavours.

Klosterbraueri Weissenoher Bonifatius Dunkel

This deep brown (dunkel) ale comes from the Kloster brewery at Weissenoh, roughly 20 km north of Nuremburg, Germany. A gentle ale of wine-like texture, it delivers smooth, rich, malty flavours with only a modest level of carbonation. This in combination with low bitterness leaves the smooth, sweet malt flavours as the main focus.
