Our Melbourne drink scouts, Kanga and Maggie, recently packed us into the car to visit the Flying Brick Cider House on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Like all hard-core cider fans, they're particular about what they put in their mouths, and insist on ciders made from apples or pears: none of that sugary lolly water for Kanga and Maggie. And the Flying Brick obliged, impressing us with a range of ciders, all made 100 per cent from fruit, with no added sugar.

Original Apple Cider, Pear Cider and Draught Cider are all available in bottle as well as on tap, with Pink Lady and Fuji Apple (in the English scrumpy style) available on tap only.

Flying Brick Cider House belongs to Lyndsay and David Sharpe, owners also of nearby Leura Park Estate and Jack Rabbit vineyard. Nyall Condon makes the ciders.

Flying Brick Original Cider
★★★★
$88 24x330ml

Nyall Condon makes Original Cider from pink lady and Lady William apples. I call it the "riesling" of Flying Brick's range because of its purity and lightness – a cider that rests entirely on fresh, pure apple flavours without signs of the maker's input. A very slight sweetness is offset by brisk acidity.

Flying Brick Pear Cider
★★★★
$88 24x330ml

Like Flying Brick's Original Cider, the pear version rests entirely on the purity of the fruit Nyall Condon makers it from – in this instance, packenham pears. It's pale coloured with a light, wine-like texture. Crips acidity accentuates the very delicate pear flavour and aftertaste. (The ciders are available at flyingbrickciderco.com.au).
