Rob Gibson makes some of the best shiraz and merlot in the Barossa, sourced from his vineyards at Light Pass, Stockwell and Eden Valley. He is a former senior viticulturalist for Southcorp and knows all about growing grapes. This merlot is the latest in an impressive line, and comes from the superlative 2010 harvest. The colour is deep red-purple and has an explosive bouquet of spices, dark fruits, flowers and a trace of star anise. The palate holds masses of primary fruit; big and bold and properly ripe, with ample, smooth tannins. It's full-bodied and long in the mouth, and should develop superbly in time, as have previous vintages. Best now to 2028. 14 per cent alcohol.
Food: Cassoulet, veal saltimbocca, vitello tonnato, roast pork with all the trimmings.
