Box Grove Vineyard Prosecco 2012 $18

Sarah Gough, winemaker and mother, is the talent behind Box Grove Vineyard at Tabilk in central Victoria and, while a devotee of Rhone varieties, she has also produced a really lovely, aromatic prosecco. It's zingy and vibrant with hints of citrus blossom, some complexity with a touch of creaminess, citrus and pear fruit. There's plenty of gentle fizz plus it's super dry, which I prefer. Jansz Premium Tasmania 2007 $40

There are many excellent Australian sparkling wines available for Mother's Day and this recently released 2007 from Tasmanian-based Jansz is one of them. It is a rich, voluptuous style with creamed honey, honeysuckle notes, a touch of aldehyde adding to its complexity and highlighting its citrus and stone fruit before a persistent finish. The acidity cleanses the palate, making this a neat match to canapes as well as prawns, lobster or scallops. From Nicks Wine Merchants, Doncaster.

Bannockburn Chardonnay 2010 $57

While sparkling wines tend to feature on Mother's Day because it's all about celebrating, sometimes a great bottle of wine is a better option when it comes to dining. If one of her favourite wines is chardonnay then Bannockburn's 2010 will impress. It's a stunning wine - complex, savoury as anything with match-strike sulphides, citrus and fig nuances and fresh, natural acidity, yet richness, a creamy palate and plenty of texture, too. Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Non-Vintage $100

Mother's Day is one where splurging is essential, and that often means champagne. I've long been a fan of Charles Heidsieck but the quality waned for years: with new ownership and a refocus on the style, I'm glad to report the house is en forme. The brut reserve is in a new snazzy bottle comprising equal amounts of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier from the 2007 vintage for the base wine, with about 40 per cent reserve wine. Creamy, citrusy with fine, long-lasting bead. Try the Prince Wine Store.
