Yalumba's Hill Smith family expands

The Tasmanian expansion plans of Yalumba's Hill Smith family have taken a leap forward.

It has bought the Frogmore Creek vineyard established by Tony and Joyce Scherer, part of about 300 hectares in the Coal River Valley. The Hill Smiths have bought the adjoining property as well. Frogmore Creek is 40 hectares of pinot noir and chardonnay, established from 1996. It will be renamed Parish Vineyard and the fruit will go to Jansz, where winemaker Natalie Fryar will make sparkling wine from it.

Ten hectares of the second title will be named Mount Lord and planted to pinot noir for Dalrymple still table wines, and managed by vigneron Peter Caldwell.

The Scherers will continue to be neighbours and the conservation work they initiated at Frogmore Creek will be continued by the new owner, Hill Smith Family Vineyards, led by Robert Hill Smith.
