Well-known Broome-based brewer, Marcus Muller, is to join Canberra's Zierholz Premium Brewery. Proprietor Christoph Zierholz says he hopes to free-up more of his own time to develop his business.

Zierholz runs his original brewery and pub in Kembla Street, Fyshwick, and an outlet at the University of Canberra.

However, he has one particularly attractive opportunity to pursue: establishing a new venue in the popular arts precinct on the Kingston foreshore.

Muller, originally from Cologne, Germany, moved to Australia in late 2000 after completing a four-year degree in Munich. His brewing experience includes two lengthy stints at Scharer's, Picton, a short period at Schwartz Brewery, Sydney, and a year at Blue Tongue in the Hunter region.

For the last five years, Muller has been brewing at Martin and Kim Pierson-Jones's Matso's Brewery, Broome.

Drinkers love Ruby Ale, one of two seasonal brews now on tap at Zierholz's Fyshwick and Canberra University outlets. The delicate ruby colour and rich, smooth head set the mood for the fruity, full, delicious flavours that follow. Citrus-like hops flavours and lingering hops bitterness offset the sweetness and give a refreshing more-ish finish.

An impenetrable black colour and powerful flavours make Christoph Zierholz's Baltic Ale a beer for heroes. The style supposedly originated in the Baltic states as a souped-up, high-alcohol version of English porter. A sweet malt flavour, reminiscent of golden syrup, underpins this intense beer, cut through with bitter, roasted grain flavours.
