A.Baker is laid-back and cool in its New Acton home. There's the bakery section, with racks of fresh loaves, croissants and pies behind the counter, or the cafe where weekend brunches include baharat-spiced eggs with grilled sourdough. Or go down to the hidden basement bar where there are board games to pass the time with a glass of wine, or simple hearty specials once a week.
The restaurant side of things is pretty relaxed, with a good mix of small and large plates, plenty of cured meats to pick at, and a wine list that is heavy on Canberra wines to match to each dish.
Spaghettini tossed through with egg yolk, silverbeet and liver is appetising and perfect for a post work dinner, or get a platter of cheeses including a Pyengana cheddar from Tassie.
Jarrod Deaton and chef Bernd Brademann also put on special "eat local" harvest dinners where guests dine on fresh produce from their own home gardens (they ask you to bring your contribution to the kitchen a day or two before the event).
And they've now started up street food style markets that will run regularly in the lovely open courtyard, so perfect for summer.
