Silo: Best Canberra restaurants 2015

Start the day with a fresh Bloody Mary and a piperade omelette at Silo and the rest will fall into place. Silo bakery has been a trailblazer for European style cafe eating in Canberra for over a decade. And week in week out they keep the sensational food and the fresh ideas coming.

As you walk into this narrow chic space the bakery spread lays out the first set of temptations: rows of glossy tarts (prune clafoutis, chocolate and peppercorn...) tender brioche, juicy pies and the best bread (still) in Canberra.

But don't go too hard to early, make yourself sit and inspect the lunch menu, which puts many of the capitals fancier establishments to shame. Take a classic staple, the tart flamiche, or beautiful blistered pizza with radicchio and prosciutto or mackerel with salsa verde.

A cheese plate to finish is a wise choice, especially if you have succumbed to the beautifully curated wine list. The list is perfectly calibrated for lunch, and matched with the food with the kind of precision and love we have come to expect from the duo that drive this place, Graham Hudson and Leanne Gray. Truly the king and queen of casual Canberra eating, long may they reign.
