The low-FODMAP diet, adopted by sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome, limits sugars that are difficult for the small intestine to absorb such as fructose, fructans and lactose. FODMAP stands for "fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols" and the diet recommends against milk, certain fruits, onion and garlic. Eating out can be challenging and may require some menu Q&A but it's not impossible: Japanese is said to be one of the safer options, while Indian is often the most difficult.

Green Gourmet

Two big offenders on the low-FODMAP diet - garlic and onion - are on the no-go list at this 100 per cent vegan restaurant, which makes menu-navigation a whole lot easier. Caution should still be taken, but the lengthy menu should have you covered. Also at Newtown.

Bodhi

Another meat-free eatery that's also strictly garlic- and onion-free, Bodhi is a Sydney stalwart, offering a la carte dinner and daily yum cha. The pretty fig-tree shaded setting between St Mary's Cathedral and the pools is a bonus. Note, careful ordering is still required to steer high-FODMAP clear.

Quay

One of Sydney's most famous fine-diners is also famously accommodating. Three-hatted Quay will – with notice – go above and beyond to ensure diners can indulge without fear of dietary-requirement hiccups. Phone ahead to discuss.

Millone's

The extensive Italian menu at this popular suburban restaurant and bar gets the thumbs up from low-FODMAPS diet blogger, Leanne Shelton. There are (gluten-free) pizzas – sauce-free if preferred to avoid garlic – pasta, salads and meats from the grill. Also at McGraths Hill.
