Garema Place just got another soupcon of hipness. A cool little hole-in-the-wall cafe has opened in the square next to Shorty’s. Tuck Shop has a coffee window and serves a simple lunch menu of paninis, jaffles (that’s toasted sandwiches to the rest of us) and other baked goods. It’s the latest in a couple of interesting new additions in Civic: paleo outlet Thrive has been open for a month in the Canberra Centre, doing a fast, healthy-food menu of grains and proteins, all geared around the paleo diet.

Breakfast includes buckwheat muesli and an $8.50 ‘‘breakfast bowl’’ that includes brown rice, scrambled whites and vegetables with options to add salmon or avocado. Lunch includes a bowl of greens, more brown rice and chicken, steak or fish ($9.50-$12.50 depending on size), and salads and soups. There are also a lot of juices, smoothies and drinks that you can customise with so-called ‘‘superfood’’ ingredients such as bee pollen, maca, whey protein and acai. See thr1ve.me for more.
