Cuban sandwiches are so hot right now - here's our pick of the best

By Veda Gilbert

This late-night venue might be better known for its hefty burgers but the Cubano Toastie ($11) is well worth a try. Squished between two slices of toasted ciabatta and held together with a generous layer of melted American cheddar, subtly spiced pulled pork and slices of shaved double-smoked Virginia ham rest comfortably with Polish pickles. On weekdays between 11am and 2pm, pimp your sandwich with chips and a soft drink, Boags beer or a glass of house wine for an extra $4.

Pope Joan

Available from 11am, The Cuban ($14) at Pope Joan is a healthy offering. Pulled pork spills from a La Madre artisan bakehouse soft roll, topped with organic Dairy Farmers Australia Gruyere cheese, leafy greens, carrot shavings, and sliced pickles. Add a side of crinkle cut chips ($7) to balance out the healthiness, and a locally sourced old-school lemonade ($5) or a cup of AllPress coffee.

Bowery to Williamsburg

A nod to the classic Cuban roast pork dish, the Lechon Asado ($13) at this laneway American eatery packs a punch - but you can crank if up a notch with some Tapatio hot sauce. Warm braised pork rests inside a toasted brioche bun with pickled zucchini, fennel and celeriac slaw, and garlic aioli. Quell the heat with mango berry iced tea ($5) but leave room for a gluten-free peanut-butter brownie ($5.50).

Fancy Hanks

Part of the bar menu available from opening till close, the Cubano ($10.50) at Hanks is a combination of succulent 12-hour charcoal-smoked whole hog, pulled and squashed in a butter-rubbed toasted baguette with sweet dill pickles, shaved ham, melted Swiss cheese and mustard. Add a side of hush puppies (which are deep-fried cornbread balls, $5) or crunchy fries ($5.50) for the ultimate indulgence. Time it right to partake in their nightly happy hour, 4pm-7pm, for $6 pints, slushies and house wine.

Acland St Cantina

Part of their Food to Go menu, from 5pm you can grab The Cubano ($15), a mega sandwich comprising layers of pulled pork, sliced jalapenos, coriander, cheese, shaved salami, ham and mustard in a crunchy toasted roll. Phone your order ahead or nurse a $10 cocktail special from the Cantina Bar while you wait, such as the Paloma, a zesty mix of tequila, grapefruit, lime, soda and Agave. Alternatively, grab a bottle of Vegra Modelo Mexican dark lager from the Mexi-Mart to balance out the big meat flavour.
