This is a proud heritage town. Most of the shop fronts and hotels on the main street retain their 19th century look. There's also a Morton Bay Fig tree that was planted in 1877.

Nearby Lake Moodemere is a wetlands area with river red gums and great fishing, Stantons Bend has lovely swimming along a sandy beach and Police Paddocks is a 400-hectare island reserve that is ideal for camping.

"Rutherglen is ideally located to produce beautiful food and wine. We are lucky to have so many excellent local producers and we stock the family-owned Boosey Creek Cheeses and Rich Glen Olive Oil from Yarrawonga as well as Kiewa Milk, jams and preservatives from Yackandandah Jam and Preserving Company and Gnangara Premium Fresh salads.

We also carry a couple of hundred local wines from regional producers such as Warrabilla Wines, which does a fantastic big bodied Durif, the boutique Scion Vineyard and old favourites like Campbells, Bullers and Stanton & Killeen.

A huge favourite around here are the cherries from Chiltern, which fly out the door when in season."
