1. Cow and Moon, Enmore

Since being crowned world's best gelato in September, this family business in Enmore has been drawing in lines around the block. As tempting as it is to be anti-mainstream and leave them off the list, it's impossible to ignore the expert verdict from the Gelato World Tour title in Rimini, Italy. The star of the show is undoubtedly their almond affogato flavour.

2. Gelato Messina, Darlinghurst

Gone are the days when regular chocolate was enough to excite customers. In a competitive gelato market, bars are pushing the limits of creativity. From balsamic vinegar and strawberry to peanut butter and jelly, Messina's daily specials are always extravagantly wacky. Splurge on a gelato cake and uncover endless layers of goodness.

3. N2, Dixon Street, Sydney

Speaking of the extravagantly wacky, N2 has created a remarkable brand for itself, mixing chemistry and culinary skills to create experimental flavours such asKinder Surprise and buttered popcorn. Gelatos are frozen in liquid nitrogen and topped with a syringe.

4. Sparrow Gelato and Espresso, Crows Nest

Sparrow is a local secret, situated on a little road in Crows Nest. Make sure to try their salted caramel and espresso flavours. Best of all, they also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner for those looking for a more wholesome meal.

5. Frangipani Gelato, Cronulla
