An impressive soaring ceiling with timber beams, chunky tables and bench seats give the back bar of this popular pub a historic feel. The big tables suit feasting and beer or cider swilling with a group of friends, but there are also more intimate corners with leather armchairs built for sinking into with a glass of wine. Comfort food like braised beef pie with potato mash, or a cheeseburger with wagyu, hits the spot best (fattoush salad, with an odd cinnamon-flecked yoghurt, less so). Chicken liver paté is seductively smooth and sweet, served with cornichons and toasty warm bread.
